Abstract
In a modern era like now, some young mothers feel reluctant to breast-feed their children. In fact, this phenomenon has been a culture for quite a long time,especially in big cities. There is not yet widespread awareness of mothers of giving exclusive breast milk to their children at age 0-6 months. There are a lot of factors, which influence mothers’ habit in breast-feeding that must be concerned, including the support of the family. The aim of this research is to know the correlation between family support and breast feeding behavior of mothers having 0-6 month old babies in Kaligesing Puskesmas in Purworejo Region in 2001. This research uses analytic survey method with retrospective time approach. The population in this research is all mothers breast-feeding 0-6 month old babies and utilizing health servive in Kaligesing Puskesmas in Purworejo Region. The sample is chosen using purposive sampling and since the population is limited, the entire population becomes the sample. The statistic test used in this research is Kendall Tau, which gave a result of 0.374. in this research, the value of p was (0.032) smaller than 0.05 that made the hypothesis accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a correlation between family support and breast feeding behavior of mothers having 0-6 month old babies in Kaligesing Puskesmas in Purworejo Region in 2001. Based on the result of the research and discussion, it is suggested that the family of breastfeeding mothers who have 0-6 month old babies improve the communication frequency with these mothers and give moral and spiritual supports to their breastfeeding-0-6 month-old-babies behavior.
