Abstract

ackground: Social Economic Survey of the Central Bureau of Statistics in 2001 and 2004 showed an increase in the prevalence of children age 15-19 years who smoke. In 2001 amounted to 12,7%, in 2004 increased to 17,3%. Finkelstein (2006) states that the stress level and high of anxiety has led to the increased risk for smoking. Objective: This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the anxiety level with smoking behavior in student class X and XI in Colombo Senior High School Sleman Yogyakarta Research Methods: This study is a non-experimental research using descriptive method of correlation with the design of a cross-sectional study. The population of as many as 236 students of the school year 2010/2011. The method of determining the sample with a purposive sampling technique so that the sample was 70 people. The Research instrument using a questionnaire. The validity Test and reliability using the product moment and alpha Crombach. The data analysis using Statistical Spearman's Rho test. The results: The results of this study found that: (1) of the 70 respondents there were 2 (3%) of respondents had severe levels of anxiety, 56 (80%) of respondents have high levels of moderat anxiety, and 12 (17%) of respondents have high levels of low anxiety, (2) of the 70 respondents there were 2 (3%) of respondents have a smoking behavior with high category, 30 (43%) of respondents have a smoking behavior with enough categories, and 38 (54%) of respondents have a smoking behavior with the low category; (3) obtained a coefficient correlation of -0,480 with a significance of the numbers on the error level of 5% (0,05), the meaning there is a negative and significant relationship between anxiety level with smoking behavior in male students of Colombo senior high school Yogyakarta. Suggestion: Parents, especially fathers need to provide a good example for their children and teachers need to provide counseling and understanding to students about the impact that will be caused by cigarettes.
