Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is breastfeeding without any other food addition until the baby is 6 months. Breastfeeding rate in Indonesia especially in the municipality of Yogyakarta is very low. There are several influencing factors such as mother's knowledge, occupation, mother's condition, infant condition, family support, support of health workers, and socio-culture. Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the factors that influence the success of exclusive breastfeeding at Ngampilan Yogyakarta Primary Health Center. Research method: This research type applied quantitative method with descriptive correlative design and used cross sectional time approach. The samples were 39 mothers who had infants aged 6-12 months with random sampling technique. The instrument of this study was a questionnaire about the success of exclusive breastfeeding and several factors related to the success of exclusive breastfeeding. The analytical method used chi square. Results: There was no correlation between maternal knowledge (p = 0.782), support of health workers (p = 1.000), and socio-cultural (p = 0.225) with exclusive breastfeeding success. There was a relation between occupation (p = 0.004), mother condition (p = 0.002), infant condition (p = 0.019), and family support (p = 0.008) with exclusive breastfeeding success. The most dominant factors affecting the success of exclusive breastfeeding was infant condition (t = 3.987). Conclusion: There was a relationship between occupation, mother condition, infant condition and family support with exclusive breastfeeding success at Ngampilan Yogyakarta Primary Health Center. Suggestion: Respondents who have a 0-6 month old baby are expected to give exclusive breastfeeding and can raise awareness of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, and have high patience during exclusive breastfeeding.
